Ohio Baby Box in Clermont County Saves a Life as Hamilton, OH Installs First Safe Haven Baby Box

A newborn was recently and safely surrendered at the Union Township Fire Station in Clermont County, Ohio—another life saved through the Safe Haven Baby Box program. Founder Monica Kelsey confirmed the surrender, noting that the child was healthy and that every baby placed through their boxes has been adopted.

This lifesaving news comes just days after Hamilton installed its first Safe Haven Baby Box at Fire Station #22, the 395th box in the United States and the first in Butler County. The Safe Haven organization reports 71 newborns have been rescued nationwide.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes offer a secure, legal option for mothers in crisis. The temperature-controlled boxes lock once a baby is placed inside, giving the mother time to leave safely before an alarm alerts first responders. Babies are then taken to a hospital for care and placed in state custody, where they are typically adopted quickly.

This surrender is a powerful reminder that abortion is never necessary. Every child is a wanted child, and there is always a family ready to love and welcome a newborn. The brave birth mother who chose life provided a plan for her child’s future—one rooted in hope, safety, and dignity. Her decision reflects the courage and compassion that Safe Haven laws are designed to support.

Ohio law allows mothers to legally surrender unharmed newborns 30 days old or younger at baby boxes, hospitals, fire stations, police stations, and EMS providers. Ohio’s first Safe Haven Baby Box surrender occurred last December in Lebanon, demonstrating the ongoing importance of these resources.
