Three Years Since Roe: A Victory for Life, A Challenge (or worse) for Ohio

Today marks the third anniversary of the historic Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade and ended nearly 50 years of federal protection for abortion. This ruling corrected an egregious error—there is no constitutional right for a mother to end the life of her preborn child. For the first time in a generation, states were empowered to protect life at every stage, and many have taken bold action to do just that. As a result, thousands of preborn children are alive today who otherwise may not have been.

But the battle is far from over.

In states like our beautiful Ohio, the overturning of Roe opened a door, and the implementation of the Heartbeat Law—prohibiting most abortions once a heartbeat is detected. For approximately 11 weeks following the end of Roe v. Wade, Ohio was under a six-week abortion ban in 2022, contributing to the 15% decline the state saw for abortions that year. The vacuum suction machines in Ohio were silent, and there was peace in the wombs of mothers for those 11 weeks.

Our hearts still break by all that unfolded in Ohio in 2023, allowing pro-abortion activists to succeed in passing a constitutional amendment that enshrined broad abortion rights in the state’s constitution. This has left many pro-life Ohioans asking: where do we go from here?

The answer is: forward with resolve.

Ohio’s pro-life movement continues to educate, advocate, and care—not only for preborn children but for their mothers, families, and communities. The mission is not over (in fact, we are busier than ever!) because abortion remains legal in Ohio; it’s all the more urgent. The abortion cartel is intent on stripping away every safety protection for women in Ohio. We must strengthen support systems for expecting mothers, expand life-affirming alternatives, and work toward restoring a culture that recognizes the dignity of every human life—from the moment of conception.

As we look ahead, it is vital that pro-life Ohioans remain engaged and continue to advocate for legislation that protects life and empowers women to choose life. Just last week, pro-life leaders from across the state gathered at the Ohio Statehouse to meet with members of the Pro-Life Caucus and address the tragic reality of Ohio’s expanding abortion access. The meeting focused on advancing new pro-life legislation and urging the Ohio Department of Health to enforce basic safety standards for abortion facilities—standards that every legitimate healthcare provider is expected to meet.

This effort is not about politics, but about protecting women,
holding the abortion industry accountable,
and restoring a culture of life in Ohio.

We greatly appreciate our strong community and the sincere prayer that so many of our supporters offer for the cause of LIFE in Ohio!
