The Irony Is Not Lost on Us

Hundreds of billions could go to abortion industry through bill intended to save lives.

(Cincinnati, OH) - The latest COVID-19 relief bill, known as the American Rescue Plan, has passed Congress and was signed into law by President Biden on Thursday, March 11th. It provides $1.9 trillion in supposed relief for Americans. However, the irony is not lost on pro-lifers. This bill is intended to save lives, yet it will fund the deaths of unborn babies all over the country and the world.

One of the most egregious offenses in the bill is the elimination of the Hyde Amendment, which has been included in the past five COVID relief bills. The Hyde Amendment forbids most taxpayer dollars from funding abortions except in cases of rape, incest, or to save a mother’s life. According to the Charlotte Lozier Institute, since 1976, research indicates that the Hyde Amendment has saved over two million unborn children. The Hyde Amendment has actually received bipartisan support since it's creation 44 years ago. Now it has been removed from this bill, forcing Americans to pay for abortions through their tax dollars. Besides the removal of the Hyde Amendment, the bill gives Planned Parenthood and the like further opportunities for funding. According to the analysis of the Family Research Council, over $459 billion spent through this bill can fund abortions through direct channels, subsidies for faciliites/lobbying/health plans, and bailouts.

Thank you to our Cincinnati Right to Life endorsed Congressmen Chabot, Davidson and Wenstrup, and Senator Portman for your "no" vote on this bill. We are grateful for your bold stand against this outrageous offense to the unborn. We need brave leaders like you in the highest levels of government to end this grave human rights violation.

See below for statements from our endorsed Congressmen.

Congressman Steve Chabot

“For decades, there has been one aspect of the abortion debate on which the vast majority of Americans — Republican, Democrat or Independent — have been able to agree, which is that our tax dollars should not be used to pay for abortions. To do otherwise is tantamount to forcing someone who is morally opposed to abortion to pay for an act they believe to be murder. This runs directly in opposition to the First Amendment which guarantees each American the right to freely exercise their personal religious beliefs without interference from the government. That Democrats in Washington are now abandoning this basic freedom upon which our nation was founded and has thrived for over 230 years is unconscionable, and underscores just how radical the left is becoming in this country.”

Congressman Warren Davidson

“You can’t call the “American Rescue Plan” a COVID relief bill! Look no further than the funding for Planned Parenthood. There’s no pandemic-related reason to fund an organization whose mission is to end the life of unborn children. This isn’t about COVID. For progressive democrats, it’s about ‘fundamentally remaking America’ and not letting this public health crisis go to waste.”

Congressman Brad Wenstrup

"The so-called COVID relief bill that recently passed the House contained significant pro-life concerns. While the majority of Americans agree their tax dollars shouldn't be used to fund abortion, Democrats in Congress went out of their way to remove longstanding pro-life protections to ensure taxpayer dollars aren't used to pay for abortions. I proudly supported amendments which would have preserved those pro-life protections, but Democrats refused to consider the amendments. While this bill unfortunately passed, I will continue the fight to protect life and our most vulnerable as long as I am in Congress."
