November 19, 2009 - The word is in. The initial version of the Senate healthcare bill - H.R. 3590 - includes federally funded abortion.
Even if you have already contacted your Senators on healthcare, please call your U.S. Senators TODAY to vote against "cloture" - 202/224-3121.
Cloture will cut off floor debate and force the bill as it now stands to the Senate floor.
Only 60 votes are needed to pass cloture.
If cloture passes, this pro-abortion bill only needs a simple majority to pass.
Predictions are that the vote on cloture will occur this Saturday.
Call your Senators with this message:
"Vote NO on cloture and any healthcare bill that does not include AT MINIMUM the Stupak-Pitts amendment against abortion, and oppose any healthcare measures that do not protect human beings from conception to natural death."
If you are unsure who your legislator is, check www.senate.gov or contact your local offices for the political parties.
More information:
Last night, Wednesday, November 18th, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid introduced the Senate healthcare bill. It is 2,074 pages long and the Congressional Budget Office estimates its cost at $890 billion.
The bill does not include the House version's pro-life Stupak-Pitts amendment which prohibits federal funding for abortion.
According to StopTheAbortionMandate.com, "Even MSNBC reported this morning that the Senate bill "would allow the new government insurance plan to cover abortions and would let companies that receive federal funds offer insurance plans that include abortion coverage."
According to the National Right to Life Committee, "The Reid bill establishes a big new federal health insurance program, the public option (although now referred to in Reid's bill as the "community health insurance option"). The bill authorizes (on page 118) the federal Secretary of Health and Human Services to require coverage of any and all abortions throughout the public option program. This would be federal government funding of abortion, no matter how hard they try to disguise it. In addition, the bill creates new tax-supported subsidies to purchase private health plans that will cover abortion on demand."
According to Cincinnati Tea Party: "Here is a list of key players in the Senate healthcare debate who could be a "NO" vote when cloture vote comes up. Some tips on calling them - be polite, but firm in stating your request (vote against the bill)."
